Advantech Launches 2nd Intel Xeon 5500 ATCA Blade
1 year 1 month ago → Industry News
Hot on the heels of its first Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500-based AdvancedTCA design, Advantech today announced it will be sampling a dual processor ATCA blade version with selected customers next month. The MIC-5322 follows smoothly in the tracks of the single processor design and offers ultimate performance for power hungry OEM’s who have no reservations about cooling blades over the 200W thermal design envelope.
Protected Investment with Software and Hardware Re-Usability
The underlying architecture and software drivers remain identical to the MIC-5320 single processor model making software fully reusable. Customers can freely choose the module which matches their application performance needs and chassis cooling capabilities.
In addition to supporting hot-swappable rear transition modules (RTM) for explicit carrier grade or HA applications that require it, the MIC-5322 blade adheres to Advantech’s Common RTM definition developed to maximize interoperability and re-use between RTM’s and ATCA blades. These guidelines clearly define the management interface and RTM port mapping for interconnects such as USB, PCIe, XAUI and SAS. In this way, customized RTM’s can be re-used among different blades and generation of blades.
Faster Processing and Enhanced Network Connectivity Speed End-to-End Throughput
The MIC-5322 is the third in a line of Advantech designs based on the Intel® Xeon® 5500 series where the higher processing power, improved DDR3 memory latency, faster PCI Express 2.0, and accelerated virtualization technologies provide impressive processing capacity. The design enhancements in Intel’s new 82599 10 GbE controller also play a key role in end-to-end network performance and throughput. Compared to the previous generation Intel® 82598, the Intel® 82599 is packed with new and improved features contributing up to a 2.5 times improvement in LAN throughput. Corresponding hardware optimizations in the Intel® 82599 include a new PCI Express 2.0 interface (5 Gbps) to improve the entire data path as well as intelligent queue support (VMDq) optimized for multi-core processors.
The MIC-5322 is a key element in applications such as IMS media gateways, application servers and media servers or in 3G network infrastructure elements such as serving and gateway support nodes as well as in LTE-specific elements including Mobile Management Entities and Serving Gateways.
The introduction of Advantech’s MIC-5322 follows the early success of the MIC-5320 ATCA blade & the FWA-6500 network application platform. By using common architecture products across multiple form factors and platforms customers can deploy a scalable product line with maximum software re-use.
