Fujitsu Microelectronics Joins Cisco to Demonstrate First Multi-Vendor Interoperability Using Mobile WiMAX With Beamforming, MIMO

1 year 11 months ago → Technology Partnerships

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 17 -- Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) will team up with Cisco on the industry's first multi-vendor demonstration of interoperable video streaming using mobile WiMAX with beamforming and multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) capabilities at WiMAX World in Chicago, September 30 -- October 2.

In booth 622, Fujitsu, a global leader in WiMAX technology, will demonstrate video streaming using the Cisco BWX300 WiMAX base station and the Fujitsu customer premise equipment (CPE). In the demonstration, multiple video streaming and ftp files will be wirelessly transferred between the Cisco WiMAX base station and the Fujitsu USB dongle.

Fujitsu will also feature commercial products developed by the company's ODM partners, which are powered by the Fujitsu mobile WiMAX chipset. The chipset includes the Fujitsu MB86K21, a one-chip MAC and PHY mixed signal baseband SoC, and the MB86K71 RF module, which incorporates an RF-IC, antenna switches, a power amplifier, filters, and an oscillator circuit. (See the June 16, 2008, press release: www.fujitsu.com/us/news/pr/fma_20080616.html.)

Another live demonstration features a Fujitsu base station transmitting real-time video from a web camera linking the base station and the CPE.

The interoperability demonstration with Cisco showcases how adaptive beamforming with MIMO technology is implemented on a mobile WiMAX (802.16e) network. It's estimated that WiMAX systems with adaptive beamforming will double system capacity, while offering up to twice the coverage of simple WiMAX networks in a fully mobile setting.
